The Heart of Hobbs

When a community planning consultant asked a large group of people "Where is the heart of your city?", the answers were all the same... downtown Hobbs.  Downtown Hobbs is the heart of the city, both geographically and historically, and for those who grew up here, emotionally.

The MainStreet vision is one of storefront parking, trees, fountains, and strolling through shops and galleries. Leave the crowded parking lots, bumper-car shopping cart adventures, and "rush, rush, rush" feeling to spend some time relaxing, shopping, visiting, and renewing friendships in the safe, well-lit, beautiful Heart of Hobbs.

MainStreet is making a large commitment to the city of Hobbs. MainStreet's mission is to restore the Heart of Hobbs to the bustling area it once was and volunteers are working energetically to bring activity to this area. The Christmas Lighting Promenade and Hobbs August Nites are just two of the ways that MainStreet Hobbs is working to bring this activity to an all time high.

No, they do not expect a huge retail giant to locate to Broadway, but they do expect to see art galleries, museums, bookstores, dance theaters, restaurants, coffee shops, bed & breakfasts, antique shops, artist-in-residences, and any other business that would encourage people to get together socially. MainStreet is working toward incentive programs that will encourage businesses to locate in the Heart of Hobbs.

MainStreet's long-term plan involves several parks, a plaza, façade improvements, and streetscape improvements. Look for fresh paint, new trash receptacles, new benches, larger trees, a mural or two, and very few vacant buildings. The real estate and rental costs in this area will increase dramatically in the next few years as the improvements continue.

MainStreet is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization comprised of local people interested in preserving this part of Hobb's history. Your support is greatly appreciated.
